Hello Kitty, Doraemon in China

From July 2009, China will require all personal computers sold within the country to be fitted with software that blocks access to certain websites. Chinese government officials say the software, known as “Green Dam – Youth Escort” will filter out pornography and violence. Supposedly, over $7 million has been invested in this project by the government.

But how effective is this software? Internet users who tested the new software found out that it blocked photos of babies, pigs and even the cartoon cat Garfield. But it didn’t block cartoon characters, Hello Kitty and the Japanese robo-cat, Doraemon.

It seems that Hello Kitty and Doraemon filter through Chinese Cyber Censorship.
