Black and White or Colour – Just Miyajima

Japan’s well-known red gate, close to the city of Hiroshima, is today a cultural heritage site and photographed by many in all seasons. But Miyajima has been a popular tourist spot for an eternity it seems.

In the kimonobox, amongst a stash of old polaroid snaps, I found a picture of Japan’s magnificent Miyajima Torii. It is taken in 1953 with Ojiichan (a young man then) standing in the foreground.

It is lovely to nostalgically look through the old snaps of Miyajima. It is also great to make a comparison with the black and white shot in 1953 and the colour digital shot of today. Thanks to h.orihashi on flickr I have matched up the location.

How time and technology has moved on, yet the beauty of this iconic site remains the same.
