Best Ume, Japan

Ume boshi was one of the first Japanese foods I encountered on my trip to Nagoya in 1985. My host mother had kindly packed me a typical Japanese lunchbox. The ume boshi was tart and salty.

Since that time and that first “obento,” my interest and love of ume boshi has increased. In fact, I have become an “ume boshi connoisseur.” (Don’t forget to check out the link to Ume boshi cheesecake at the bottom of the page.)

The health benefits of ume boshi are well known. Most Japanese house wives will agree that the ume boshi joins boiled rice – okayu – as a key remedy for common colds and flu. The catechin acid of the ume boshi is supposed to assist digestion through increasing saliva production. The pyric acid helps liver function.

Ume boshi has also been known to cure ringworms and athlete’s foot! The ume boshi was also supposed to help Japanese samurai in battle with fatigue. Even in days of yore, the samurai knew that it was an alkaline food, which helped clean our blood and revitalise the body!!

Most of all, the ume boshi is supposed to hold a hormone which combats aging. Now that is what I need!

Quality ume boshi is expensive, but worth the money that you spend. (Does that meant investing in ume instead of botox?)

This is my all-time favourite drink on a hot summers day – chilled – it is very sweet but lovely!
