Saying Goodbye

Dad leaving for war
Dad leaving for war

Is it too sensitive an issue to post this photo from the kimonobox? I hope not. It is a photo that has sat in my family kimonobox for the past 61 years. It is a photo from 1938. The girl Ruriko is aged 13 and fiddling with the Japanese flag. It is a photo of her final goodbyes to her father. He was conscripted into the Japanese Imperial Army and this was the last time he saw the family as he was killed a few weeks later in China.

I am sure there are still many people who might find it a sensitive image, because it brings back unpleasant past memories. For me, this photo is a piece of history. And precious, because it fills in some pieces as to the feelings of dread and uncertainty that the family felt as he left for war.
