One of my favourite anime shows in Japan, is the story of Little Maruko, Chibi Maruko chan - ちびまる子ちゃん.

The anime tells about the day to day happenings of a small girl admist the backdrop of Japan in the 1970′s and 1980′s. It was an era when navigating through your day did not involve so many of the hi-tech gadgets and gizmos we use today. Watching the cartoon is so nostalgic. A bit like looking at the ‘randoseru’ in this picture!
Chibi Maruko chan Pictures
The series Chibi Maruko was based on the childhood of its creator, Miki Miura. A lot of Japanese people know Miura by her pen name, Momoko Sakura.
I wonder whether she imagined that her character – Chibi Maruko chan – would be on a roll of toilet paper when she first designed the comic in the 1980′s! I suppose in a strange way the paper is cute!
But I am not sure I would have thought this would have been a good idea if it were my creation …. ???

Ah …. family life in the gold old ‘Showa Era’ – it is easy to look back at this age with rose-tinted glasses – was life simpler then ? with Chibi Maruko chan – probably it was!
