The Hawaiian dance boom in Japan is something that has surprised me! The women, men and girls are really enjoying the serene music and hula hula. They look great and they are perfectionists at the style.
According to the participants there are many many Hawaiian teachers all over Japan teaching this traditional and cultural activity.
Hawaiian dancing has become a phenomena across Japan that has increased in popularity through the 1990′s but more recently has really flourished as a serious hobby. And it has become a multi-million dollar enterprise! There is a lot of money to be made in teaching hula throughout Japan.
Doing some research and looking into the family records – I found out that Hawaiian music was popular in Japan prior to World War Two. This was due to the international distribution of movies and recordings. And the nisei community ie first generation American born Japanese and Hawaiian often performed in Japan.
During wartime, however, there was a strict ban on Hawaiian musical instruments and Hawaiian songs throughout Japan.
