Yesterday, Japan opened the first jury trial since World War II. This is a huge move for the Japanese justice system which has often been accused of lacking in transparency and the democratic process. Although Japan launched a jury trial system in 1928, it was a system that was abandoned in 1943.
Since 2004, when the nation decided on the new jury system, legal experts have held seminars to make trials easier to understand and have held about 300 mock trials. Some people are still reluctant to serve on a jury due to the responsibility that they will have to take.
The introduction of this system leaves me with three initial questions -
1. Will this new jury system test the Japanese cultural aversion to individuals taking responsibility?
2. Can the system last longer than the last time it was introduced in 1928?
3. Will the new system be more effective for the Japanese in providing justice?

RT @KimonoBox: Japanese Art on Ricefields | Japan | kimonobox.com http://bt.io/4GM Some amazing photographs, just brilliant.
All I can say is WOW! To bad those rice fields couldn’t be saved. But they all have to be harvested to keep everybody working and fed. Maybe they could set up an area to do just this kind of art work. I’ve seen pictures back here with people doing this to corn fields. Reminds me of the movie “Field Of Dreams” …”If You build it they will come.”
What do you think?

Wonder why it has taken so long to re-introduce a jury system in Japan,1943 that’s quite a long time ago. Does’nt the prime minister have any say in what goes on in justice system? Maybe it will all turn out for the good.
Back home here, last time I was selected for jury duty.
Get jury notice
Inform employer of notice
$18.00/hr vs$4.oo a/day
tick, tick, tick wait to be selected for jury

tick, tick, tick case settled out of court
Seems like a waste of time, and money, but it’s part of the american way
What do jury members get paid for their participation in Japan?
