Power Cables, Japan

With the influx of internet usage over the past decade, I suppose it was only reasonable that overhead cables have increased in number!

Its a shame, because the cables spoil the environment. Can better city planning help with the containment and reduction of these overhead power cables ? Is it too late and too expensive to move some of these power lines underground?

These trees have had to be pruned
These trees have had to be pruned

These tree branches have really felt the expansion of the cables.

Wires spoil the feel of the city

But more so I wonder what would happen if an earthquake caused these kind of lines to come down.

Why are these in bags?
Why are these in bags?

What a lot of cables to sort through!

They would never have believed so much cabling would have been needed in the early days of long distance communication – what a long way we have come!

The power cables were something that really freaked me out when I got here as well. They especially don’t make sense in places like Tokyo where you have major underground structure networks. One of the biggest reasons they are built above ground has to do with some bad politics and as a partial stimulus years ago.

After living with the cables for so long, it would seem strange to see a photo without them. Almost like the street had gone nude.

In my home city (Bucharest), there is a mayor’s office decision to move all the Internet and TV cables underground. Of course, because of the costs involved, not everyone is happy about it…
Probably in Japan the same thing will happen one day. But from what I see here in Tokyo, the costs will be huge…

You would think with all the technology that Japan has that they didn’t think of putting all the cables underground. And keeping all those trees trimed seems to be a pain. Sorta like when they designed the roadways over here, were’nt thinking of the future. Now they’re tearing up the roads to meet the high demand of traffic. Sorta like all the over head cables you have there. Spoils the scenery.

Woah so many cables. Always going into ~WTF~ mode when I see those in anime or movies.
I’m glad we have most of those underground over here in Austria.

    that looks like temporary transformers in the bags. the yellow plastic sleeve is commonly used when they are doing some construction too, otherwise those feisty TEPCO boys get high on licking cables ^^;

That first photo could almost be Nakano-ku, the cable on pole capital of tokyo. You have Power, cable tv, telephone, FTTH

The cables have been up so long I’d miss them.
