When I first started studying Japanese at school I remember thinking why on earth would I have to remember the word for vending machine!? Jidohanbaiki seemed such a strange concept ….. let alone a word that might be useful!
Little did I know that the jidohanbaiki is an essential word for anyone studying Japanese to learn. There are vending machines everywhere in Japan. In fact it is estimated that there is one machine per 23 people and Japan has one of the highest vending machine densities. So yes, the word jidohanbaiki is very useful to know!

These jidohanbaiki sell all the latest drinks and have a great range of hot and cold products. They also sell cigarettes and in some machines instant noodles and ice cream can be bought. And as per the picture at the top, even Starbucks has been placed in the jidohanbaiki.
The funniest photo of jidohanbaiki that I have seen is this one taken last year in Shibuya. Found on flickr, the photo was snapped by LiveGrid. Good photo! Great expression on the school girls faces!
Now that is a Jidohanbaiki that you won’t forget in a hurry!
