I would never have thought of this combination – green beans with bacon and cheese rolls. It looks like a very popular snack at the bread shop, Little Mermaid in Musashisakai Tokyo.

I was thinking about the name Sora Mame – the direct translation is Sky Bean? But I have also heard them called horse beans. I think in English we actually call them broad beans but I am not sure that I have ever seen broad beans used in such an innovative culinary way. What are your thoughts? Do you like Soramame?

You know how so much of Japanese cooking takes color and symbolism into consideration? It’s one of the things I love about Japanese cuisine. September is the month for Hagi blossoms (Japanese bush clover) and when I used to help make box lunches for Old People’s Day (used to be Sept 15), we pressed halves of green soybeans and purple adzuki beans on molded white rice to represent the Hagi bush. These cheese rolls remind me of that.

no I have never seen any childrens stories based on beans here in the states, not that there haven’t been any published. I din’t have any young ones at home, it’s a cute piece any way..

Sora mame, or “fava beans,” are best when fried to a brown crisp and salted. They taste like peanuts when prepared this way, but they often have a thin skin around them that can chip and get stuck in your mouth, like popcorn. The quality of the oil they’re fried in will have a BIG impact on how good they taste, of course.
Soramame also have a very interesting flower, with a black mark on it.
Thanks for the comments on the color and symbolism – you are so right – it is amazing how much detail goes into foods and other consumer items in Japan that refocus people on nature…. I have made changes to the name in the title too – I knew they were the fava bean but I wondered whether it was a commonly used word or a more scientific term for the soramame
