Once upon a time Japan relied upon its manufacturing prowess to brand a strong international image. Japan Inc was a nickname that emerged with the success of the economic miracle in the 1980′s.
With the economic downtrend lasting through the 1990′s, however, a re-brand of Japan’s global identity has brought soft pop culture to the fore as an important brand for Japan. I am cool with that!
J-Pop, the shortened form of Japanese pop culture, includes animated films, video games and a range of popular cartoon characters. It also refers to many Japanese musicians and idols.
Did you know that Japan has the second largest music market in the world?
Did you know that MIT in the USA has a Cool Japan Research project? Sounds cool!
And NHK has even developed a Cool Japan TV show. Cool!

No worries – its a topic which causes strong feelings on either side of the fence. I just thought I would mention how much the Japanese government is involved in the industry of tobacco. And I rather liked the camera ciggie pack idea …. but marketing firms would never get away with that kind of angle in Western countries.

I actually liked the lamune kitkat, it’s sort of sky-blue! The orange and sakura ones were quite nice too.
Though I preferred the dark chocolate kit-kats until the doctor told me to cut down and see if it helps with
migraine.
The maccha one was disgusting, there are places for green tea and chocolate isn’t one of them!
I notice a film one and a game one in that page. I wonder where he got those.

I wonder just how well some of these KitKats have sold. There are several discount snack shops in my area in Tokyo, and the Jasmine tea KitKat was in around for months. Also, my husband bought the blueberry and strawberry cheesecake ones for about 1/3 of their original price when a seller was attempting to unload “cases” of them as cheaply as possible (and was giving away samples as well).
I think some flavors are very popular, but Nestle Japan may be overloading the market with too frequent releases. I’ve tried somewhere in the vicinity of 30 of them and I’m not sure that there is enough variation between them to make them all that interesting. If I didn’t write a snack review blog, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t even be trying some of them. The fruit ones in particular all come across as being similar – white chocolate infused with vague fruit flavors.

Many of my students are older Japanese and the thought of J-pop culture representing Japan makes them wince a bit. They are way more comfortable with Mt. Fuji, Geisha etc…
But hey, times change.
Interesting – good feedback – I have many students who feel the same way
