Reading through foreign papers this morning, it was interesting to note that Ponyo’s launch outside of Japan has produced reviews containing ‘digs’ at Japan’s ongoing attitude to whaling.
One review reads -
Admire Japanese director Miyazaki’s animation while wondering at the story of a five year old boy making friends with a goldfish princess with smiling whales in the background. The irony of Japan’s affection for whale meat subverts even the heavy sentimentality.
Australian Financial Review
- In the Sea with Ponyo
I wonder what Studio Ghibli makes of it all?

The fish I used to catch would never live that long. Maybe 1-2 weeks, then they’d visit the Tidy Bowl Man.:(
