This handmade miniature is a replica of an olden day Japanese sweet/okashi maker.

The kids great-Grandad Sugiyama used to have a sweet shop in Hongo San Chome. Natsukashii! So little things like the dango placed on the mat out the front of the shop and the black cat with his welcoming paw are lovely to see!
But truthfully this particular design reminds me more of the kind of buildings that can be found in Jindaiji, in Chofu-city, Western Tokyo.

The miniature dango or dumplings are placed outside the shop. Its a great Japanese snack from yesteryear that is still quite popular today.

Jindaiji also has a temple which is one of the oldest in Tokyo and certainly worth a visit. There are old fashioned Japanese shops and restaurants. A beautiful red bridge and lovely o-manju. The soba is particularly well-known in this area and worth the wait. Lovely spot to take the kids and pretend that you are back in olden Japan, when you are still in busy, crazy Tokyo.
