Announcement, 2016 Olympics

I have been guest blogging on the Tokyo2016 site for the past few months. It has been a great cyber-experience.

As the time gets very close to the announcement of which city will host the 2016 Olympic Games, I want to highlight some of the great postings, photos and discussions that have emerged on the Tokyo2016 site.

My favourite 2016 bid event, was the one at Fukuda Kindergarten in Hatagaya by Shibuya246.

The post discussed how the final torch bearer for the 1964 Olympics visited the kindy and demonstrated to the children how he had held the torch on that historic day. It was fabulous to see the children then try running with paper torches to re-create their own mini-Olympics. What better way to learn about history than through this kind of re-enactment!

Other events that provided great support for the 2016 Olympic bid included the soccer match between J-League teams Verdy and Vortis. At the match there were some great activities organised to create community support.

My favourite activity was this brilliant exhibition of calligraphy by girls in yukata.

As well as some great local events, blogging included discussion on the photos contributed to the flickr group Tokyo2016.

Flickr group members posted a variety of snaps documenting the preparation and grass root support for the Tokyo2016 bid.

The Flickr Five posts, as they were called, captured a number of excellent contributions.

My personal top two favourites from the Flickr group were as follows:

And this one! Because it reminded me of the latin motto ‘Nil Sine Labore’ – Nothing without Work.

I placed the latin motto on this photo as a caption because the preparation for this kind of bid (whatever the outcome) has meant a lot of hard work from teams of people across the community.

Cities pitching a bid for the 2016 Olympic Games are Tokyo, Madrid, Chicago and Rio De Janeiro. The announcement for the 2016 Games will be made in 9 days on the 2 October 2009. Good luck to all.

I have really enjoyed the blogging experience on Tokyo2016Today.

Thank you to fellow team bloggers, flickr group members and to all involved in setting up the community based Tokyo2016 blog.
