The seriousness of the nuclear tests from North Korea can not be overlooked. Japan denouced North Korea for conducting a second underground nuclear test. There will no doubt be a flurry-scurry of high-level talks underway between Japan, for one, and the UN Security Council over the next few days. Its an ongoing saga and one wonders if there will ever be a thawing of relations in the region and a move towards rational behaviour.
Whilst different in magnitude it reminds me of Japan’s national indignation a few years ago when a North Korea vessel was sunk after a battle with the Japanese coast guard. The wreckage was later pulled up and taken put on display with a notice saying that the “oceans must be kept safe for our children”.

Along with hundreds of others on that hot June day I donated a few coins and queued to see what the so called ‘spy ship saga’ was all about.

The vessel that the coastguard pulled up was a disguised as a fishing boat but in actual fact carried a formidable arsenal of equipment.

This included 2 rocket launchers, 12 rockets, machine guns and automatic rifles. Along with this were grenades and anti-aircraft guns. Not your average fishing vessel.

So this time – not a fishing vessel with ulterior intent … but still a concern to us. What will the outcome of the latest nuclear underground test be? Will there ever be a thawing in the relations in the North East Asian region?
