Security Beat, Bicycle Japan

An English ‘bobby’ is known for walking his beat, whereas a Japanese policeman is perhaps typified on his bicycle. Japanese police can often be snapped ‘on duty’ riding a bike.

Nice wide streets. Good for cycling. I am not sure whether the men in the next photo are security guards or police? But whatever the situation, nice day for a bicycle ride and they seem to be enjoying their job.

Tokyo cycling – nice way to enjoy the city!

    Do you cycle to work? In Japan, many people in certain professions such as the police force use the bicycle while at work. Great for the health! Great for the environment?

    In the area that I live we don’t have bicycle cops, just highway patrol and small city cops. To big of an area to cover. In the city I lived in previously they had them, mostly downtown for the inner city.
    For the Japanese society with the millions of people it makes it easier for your police depts. to get around and it looks like they do their job just fine.
    One question, I’ve been wondering is about the bikes, most of them look like what we would consider girl type bikes. With no bar accross the middle is that the way all bikes are sold or what? Have always wondered about that.

    The second photo those aren’t the fuzz, they are private security.
    You don’t see the fuzz out on their bikes when it rains either ^^;

    I used to cycle to work, its about 6km across shinjuku, but recently the handlebars on my old (non girly) bike snapped. (survey suggests aluminium is susceptible to metal fatigue and they were 20 years old.)

    Bunny – thanks – you were right – they were security guards!! but good story re. your bike – I used to ride a lot more to work on the bike than I do nowadays ….. it was good exercise! oh no …. feeling old!!!!
    BTW I agree I havent seen the police out on their bikes in the rain …. but I used to cycle all weathers and it is darn hard trying to cycle with an umbrella but I admire those who have mastered the skill!!
