Yokiro and The Geisha

DVD release of an older style movie - interesting?
DVD release of an older style movie

Looks like a DVD copy of the 1983 movie, The Geisha -Yokiro has been released on Amazon this year.

In the movie, Yokiro is portrayed as the largest and most succesful Geisha house in Western Japan. Featuring Ken Ogata (Ramen Girl), the story follows the complicated struggle of daily life in Geisha house.

The movie is set against the history of Ogata’s character, Katsugo who fell in love with a geisha and they had a daughter. They tried to escape but was the geisha was killed and he was left to raise the young girl.

Katsugo sells women to the Yokiro which is run by a former mistress of Katsugo, played by the actress Mitsuko Baisho.

The daughter who was being raised in the Yokiro, and known as Momowaka (Kimiko Ikegami), becomes one of the most famous and popular Geishas in the country. The story progresses with further twists and turns to involve the father’s new girlfriend who wants to become a Geisha at the Yokiro. Meanwhile, Momowaka announces that she has fallen in love.

To provide the extra challenge and action to the film, the local yakuza clan decides to take over the Yokiro.

The clips of The Geisha on youtube certainly don’t show the type of disciplined Geisha houses that one might imagine. It appears quite rough and comical at times. Not sure it works for me with regards to how I like to think of Geisha, but interesting piece of cinematography!

Has anyone ordered the movie yet? Does anyone remember the movie perhaps?

I just watched Yokiro. It did not seem very Japanese for a film about a Geisha in Japan. Perhaps the soundtrack was off-putting. I thought I caught some John Barry riffs here and there. The end also mystified me. However, it was entertaining and the geishas were lovely
