Publishing an E-book

Has anyone had success with publishing an e-book?

A while back I wanted to publish a small book to read to kids with a Japanese cultural theme.

The book I created has a simple storyline and was designed to achieve a few personal goals.

Firstly, to provide another dimension to my blog

Secondly, to test the technology

Thirdly, to see if e-books are really a desirable product or too ahead of their time and

Fourthly, the creative element of getting an original product into the market place.

My experience with the e-book so far has been frustrating. Amazon digital market place only allows you to upload content if you have a US bank account, tax file number and mailing address. Sony reader wants you to have a US phone number. Issue is great but doesnt provide a way to make the product commercial.

I have finally used smashwords to publish the ebook. What are your thoughts?
As an author, I quite like this system.
