I have been gathering information recently on e-books and digital publishing. So I was interested to read this article in the Mainichi Times. Thanks to JapanReporter on twitter for pointing it out to me today.
Did you know that most readers in Japan don’t support Google’s online e-book library?
An opinion poll the Mainichi Shimbun conducted regarding book-reading habits has revealed that the majority of respondents do not support Google’s online e-book library program.
Of those surveyed 60 percent were negative toward the U.S. Internet search leader’s new business plan of providing digitalized books online, while 31 percent supported the move. Interesting – what are your thoughts on digital books?
The young generation was more positive toward Google’s initiative, with nearly half of those in their 10s and 20s supporting the e-book library, slightly less than those who don’t. Thirty-seven percent of respondents believe reading books online or on cell phones could strain the eyes, showing a general negative stance on Internet reading rather than toward the company’s business itself.
Others expressed their concerns over the online e-book library’s adverse effect on the publishing industry, as well as any possible copyright infringements against Japanese writers. Meanwhile, 41 percent of those supporting the Internet library said that it would save them the trouble of visiting bookstores or libraries, followed by 24 percent who pointed out that Google’s new operation makes books easily accessible during their spare time.
Have you used this library?

I have been publishing my art, photo books, and others on my Issuu site since the beginning of last year and have had about 14,000 hits. I love the Issuu site. I also do the same on Scribd site.
From both these sites you can publish to your blog and now Posterous. I love the new Posterous, publishing directly from emails or a browser tool bar.
I wish I could directly post to Japundit, it just makes life quicker and easier. Ed are you reading this?
I just love your on-line book and it deserves to do well. I will be looking in to purchasing a printed version for my little girl over here in Melbourne. Are they being delivered overseas as yet?
