One of the great ways I have been able to experience Japan is via scholarship. There are many different types of scholarship that are available to young people who are interested in furthering their study of Japanese language and culture that are available. Scholarships are also a wonderful way of encouraging greater cooperation between countries at a groundroots level.
I wish that blogging and digital photography had been a part of life back in the 1980′s when I first went to Japan. I wrote a diary that has since become rather dogeared ! And my photos have faded … sadly in contrast to this beautiful shot by Compound Eye on flickr.
I would like to make a place on this blog to highlight some of the Japan scholarships that are available to students from different countries.
This post will be the first in a short series of scholarship write ups for students.
AFS stands for the American Field Service. It was a group of young Americans that served overseas as volunteer ambulance drivers evacuating the wounded from the battlefields and helping to liberate concentration camp survivors.
When they returned home they founded a movement to promote peace and prosperity through student exchange. This group became known as the AFS Intercultural Program.
For Australians, the AFS group offer some fantastic opportunties. These scholarships have already closed for 2009 but the next deadline will approach within 6 months and they are certainly something to think about. AFS are also on Twitter … checkout their tweets!
I wonder if anyone who has received one of these scholarships can make comment on their experience?
My own experiences as a Mombusho recipient were fabulous.
Have you ever thought about scholarships to study in an other country?
