The children in the photo are preparing their next blockbuster!!!
“Here’s looking at you kid!”
It could be a winner!
Low budget films or projects that can find a niche in social networking these days are really paying big dollars for success.
Take the example of Paranormal Activity.
The power of social media marketing was behind the success of a film that cost only 15 thousand dollars to make but took in $22 million at the box office last weekend. Nice return!!Better get a manager for my film newbies!!
This low budget Paranormal Activity film was discovered by Steven Speilberg, who decided, along with Paramount, to try and release it through non-traditional means. This involved Twitter, Facebook and online video.
Word started spreading and the film created a cult like following among young college students.
The students told friends which averaged around a hundred followers each on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other networks. What amazing power Spielberg has found in harnessing consumer generated marketing to sell a low budget film like this?
I wonder what Akira Kurosawa would have made of this method of marketing movies? His career spanned over fifty years and is widely seen as one of the most influential filmmakers in film history.
As a tribute to Kurosawa, a short film competition was established in 2004. The theme for the film in the 2008 competition was “Life”. The length was 10 minutes. The brief was capture your perception of Life, of joy, of anger, of love, of freedom of comfort of eternity into a ten-minute film work.
I havent found out whether there is a film competition for 2009 or 2010 yet?
Does anybody know? Maybe my film crazy duo will have to apply!!
