Silver Cross for Royals

At the bottom of the Kimonobox is an old piece of newspaper dating back to Taisho 15, 1926, June 20th. I thought I would launch the look of the new site, Kimonobox, with this photo from an old newspaper of Emperor Hirohito and his wife looking at their first born son in a old pram.

At the bottom of the Kimonobox, are old newspapers. Great Grandma Sadako was a hoarder of newspapers with top news captions of the day. We have unearthed many different pieces of newspaper from various different decades in the 20th century.

The period of this photo was taken in the Taisho Era, which ranged between 1912 and 1926.

Taisho was a time in Japan when there was much political turmoil. It was a period during which Japan began to look towards democracy as a system for government. However, the direction was short lived and history took a different turn during the 1930′s and 1940′s for Japan with unfortunate and long-lasting consequences.

The pram that the couple is lovingly watching over is a grand one indeed. It is not very Japanese looking though! I wonder if it was a Silver Cross Kensington Pram. They were and still are the Rolls Royce of baby pram.

This one is a modern design that is advertised on Amazon Japan, but currently out of stock. It states that it is Balmoral number one. Very regal sounding. Have you every wheeled a Silver Cross pram?

These days the big prams have been downsized to buggies and it is just the kiddies that get to play with the old prams of the past?

Did you ever own a Silver Cross? Do you hoard old newspapers? They are a wonderous find sometimes decades later but what a lot of work in keeping pieces of paper over such a long period of time.

My pram was a Silver Cross (I was born in 1975). My mother used it for me and for my sister and it was a huge old navy blue thing. The carrycot half took up almost the whole back seat of the car.
