How wonderful does this Xmas pine cone look! It is a Japanese pine cone made out of traditional weaving cloth called chirimen.
Chirimen is a traditional Japanese weaving technique. It was developed in the late 16th century.
The cloth has soft wrinkles and is created by two types of silk threat twisted in different directions before it turns wet. The chirimen material has a really nostalgic feel to it.
Chirimen is mostly used for the kimono, but the craft of chirimen is also used to create small objects and toys.
Kyoto is a place where chirimen crafts are found in abundance.
There is also a chirimen craft museum in Arashiyama.
Here are some books on chirimen craft. You might like to make your own chirimen crafts.
(Don’t feel you have to use these Amazon links, but more than often I get comments on the site asking how to make or where to find certain items.)
Amazingly, Amazon Japan has many items in stock that are indicative of Japanese culture and lifestyle. Is that a think local act global, or the other way around type scenario?
These are the kind of things that you can make with chirimen … a whole set of sushi!
Looks like HIS Travel organises some sort of activity around making gifts from chirimen.
