Osusume – Your recommendation

What convinces people to buy these days? Do we still go by ‘word of mouth’?
In a world, increasingly influenced by technology, whose word do we trust when it comes to recommendations – or in Japanese – osusume?

Can twitter or blogging have an influence on what we purchase? Well I believe so. I hadnt realised that Starbucks had launched a new cup for coffee until I caught a post on Shibuya246 recently.

When I scrolled to the bottom of the post I saw the new Starbucks cups for spring advertised and thought I would give them a go!

Similarly, I tuned into twitter and found a post @shanesakata discussing the Edo Open Air Museum in Koganei, Tokyo. I had been there once before but was reminded by the post that it was worth visiting again. The social networking aspect of purchasing a product or visiting/re-visiting a place of interest takes on a new realm when it becomes eveloped in cyber-recommendations. But I like it !

And to take the recommendation further into the cyber realm a new site is opening to tweet chat live about travel in and around Japan. What a wonderful idea! Perhaps you might follow my cyber o-susume?

Communications have come so far in such a short space of time …. I have travelled back and forth and lived in Japan since first going in 1985 and what a huge change I have experienced in the way that Japanese life, products and travel can be explained and recommended. Twitter and blogging certainly seem to be opening up a new sphere for recommendations. They are becoming a much more significant part of our daily lives and providing new scope for spreading the message – a ‘cyber-word of mouth’ platform.
