The bid for the Tokyo Olympics is already in full swing.
This time around the Japanese lobbying committee even has a blog to help them build appeal? How times have changed since the first Olympic Games held in Tokyo in 1964!
My question is do they have a twitter account? Are they shovel ready with their twitter fingers to help them gain greater saturation in this increasingly popular online environment?
I am on a quest to find this out!
But what are Japan’s chances and what will influence the inspectors decision? Last time the Olympics were held in Tokyo was in summer 1964. It was an Olympic Games that was marred by the fact that North Korea, Indonesia and South Africa were absent. Five thousand athletes participated in the games and 93 countries were represented. It was also the first Games to use computers to keep results. So this time, what changes and what similarities can be drawn….. will it be the first Games to lobby via twitter?
Significantly, Tokyo has cleared the first hurdle in the bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Tokyo. And on October 2 2009, the IOC members will cast their final ballots based on the evaluation commissions reports. The other finalists are of course Chicago for one, as well as Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. But my vote is with Tokyo’s bid!
Postscript: I havent checked out the other olympic potential cities twitter accounts yet but I have found a flickr lobby group for Chicago! Wow … the wonders of technology! and how it is bringing people together at grassroots to achieve a goal. http://www.flickr.com/groups/chicago2016/

That’s interesting that you are wondering whether or not there’s a twitter account for tokyo’s 2012 olympic bid. Maybe this article from Neojaponisme can explain:
http://neojaponisme.com/2009/05/19/the-fear-of-the-internet/
there’s such an aversion to the internet in this country, don’t you think?? Not the same kind of fear as the swine flu… but still… for being such a technologically advanced nation.. I’m pretty surprised.
postd my thoughts on 2016 @ http://bitly.com/Qd937 but interesting find @ http://bit.ly/t1f51 chicago has a lobby flickr group for 2016!
Does that even matter at this point? Considering how important blogging is in Japan, and how many people are able to access it via cell phones, it makes sense that they’d take that route for now.
Great to hear from you Marc … my point was that technology, communications and marketing avenues are all moving fast and twitter is just another way that tokyo can convice the international community that it is the city for the 2016 Olympics.
