One of the things that I most have enjoyed about Japan is how the change of the season is reflected in the food that is eaten. I find this much more so than in any Western country. And there is such delight in the presentation of these foods and the association with nature.
My spring clean yesterday meant I unearthed a diary that I had kept from 1995. Not because of its blogging value! but because of the beauty of the seasons captured in the okashi and ame or traditional Japanese sweets that were photographed on each page.
My favourite page of the diary was the page from March which pictured the Emperor and Empress sitting at court with traditional Japanese sweets in front of them.
We celebrate Girls Day in a similar manner. The number of boxes and care that needs to be taken in organising the unpacking and re-packing of the dolls is quite time consuming but still very rewarding. Its no wonder that you need a treat when you have finished the job.
There are of course strict time frames – like a Xmas tree – in setting up and taking down the dolls. The general rule according to my mother-in-law who watches like a hawk is, anytime after the 4th February you can get them out but make sure that they are wrapped and put away after the 3rd March otherwise you will end up missing out on marriage. Heaven forbid girls!
Nevetheless we have moved on from the March pages and the diary page for June was equally delectable. And again such attention to deatil.
