This is what I love about shopping for food in Japan – the kitchens are often in view of the customer!
Look at this one – they are making the sweets in the front window.

Kimonobox couldnt resist! And these manju are very good.

Advertised in the magazines – these manju are worth trying if you go to Kiyomizudera in Kyoto.

And they are obviously fresh – so I think the sign means – ‘eat them quick’ which we had no trouble in doing!

Japanese Puddings

I’ve posted on parfaits and pet jelly – now time for a pudding. This one really piqued the interest and taste buds – its bamboo charcoal sesame pudding! And it was very nice even if it is a variation from the standard yellow custard purin!

In Japan, the pudding is called purin and the most popular type of pudding is the custard purin that can be found in the 7-11 convenience stores.

But this sign is most confusing regarding puddings! It asks for the following acts to be prohibited in the building … I wonder what pudding acts they are talking about – ? The poor old pudding? (Click on the sign for a larger viewing!)

Jumbo Parfait – Needs Teamwork

Jumbo Parfait costing hundreds of dollars?? Now this is a challenge – has anyone ever tried one?
If so, how many people does it take to get through a jumbo size portion of trifle, in a pot the size of a vase?

I wish I had had the courage to have gone inside the shop and clicked away at closer range – but I knew that I could not consume something so decadent ….. so had to settle for photos from the front window! But I think you get the idea! Also check out the price. Incredible. I am sure I could buy a months worth of dessert for that price at least!

Parfait in Japan is a popular dessert but this one ‘takes the biscuit’ – excuse the pun! It must be a dessert fit for teamwork – only in Japan perhaps!?

Kakigori or Snow Cones

It is hot and humid in Japan at the moment. But it is just the right kind of weather for snow cones, or kakigori. Some traditional stores still use the hand cranked machine to make the kakigori. There are also electric ice shavers that do the job equally well.

The colour is very vibrant but this is a traditional Japanese dessert that is made with shaved ice and syrup.

The Kakigori dessert is very popular in summer and particularly at festival times in Japan.
