The news this morning broadcast that a Japanese team from Tokai University has leapt to the front in the 10th World Solar Power Car Challenge in Australia.

But what is a solar car race? Is the winner the car that goes fastest?

No … The vehicles are competing on which vehicle can get there using the least amount of energy, rather than in the shortest time.

From Darwin across the desert to Adelaide

The event is meant to be a trial and exhibition of ecologically friendly vehicles, by racing them through the heart of Australia’s landscape.

The vehicles race for nine hours each day. And at the end of each day the teams camp by the side of the road. Sounds hot and dusty!!
