What is a Kasapon ?

It rains a lot in Japan, so everyone carries an umbrella, but what do you do with a dripping wet brolly trailing through the department stores. The Japanese have invented a mechanical device to automatically bag the umbrella with a plastic sleeve.

One of the companies that makes these “umbrella sleeve dispensers” is Kasapon. The logo of the firm is ‘Basic for Rainy Days’ and as you enter the site online you hear lots of rain and thunder!! So apt!

Kasapon Machine

Mind you I am not sure the above photo of the traditional red umbrellas would fit into the kasapon! But certainly most normal sized umbrellas would fit the bill and the result potentially is a safer environment in the department stores – lower public liability during rainy season! – with hopefully less slippy surfaces caused by dripping brollies!
